Recommendations of a new myth

  • Michael C. O'Day: see in the dark: a new myth

If things keep going the way they're going with our current civilization, then whoever comes after us is going to need some new (and hopefully better) myths of their own. Heidi Kraay's poetic and magnificently theatrical story - of a lost little girl in a vast future wasteland, with abilities that are both gifts and a terrible curse - fills that role nicely, spinning a tale of survival, of vengeance and forgiveness, of the limits of our blinkered individual mindsets and the crucial importance of community. Really marvelous.

  • Jasmine Spiess: see in the dark: a new myth

This new myth is so beautifully fantastical, heartbreaking, and hopeful - all at the same time. What struck me most about this play is not even that it was such an amazingly crafted post-apocalyptic world, but that the need for family, community, love, and belonging were very much at the heart of the play. The dialogue flowed like water and I can only imagine what this will be like in full production! The possibilities are endless! I can't wait to see where this goes! It was an honor to read your stage directions at the Valdez Theatre Conference!

  • Greg Lam: see in the dark: a new myth

Bold interplay between post-apocalyptic world building and a fabulist style of theatremaking using masks, puppetry, and magical realist aspects. The result is a fresh attempt at making a new myth for the modern age.

  • Playwrights Foundation: see in the dark: a new myth

The community of national & local readers for the 44th annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival enthusiastically recommends SEE IN THE DARK as a Semi-Finalist this season at Playwrights Foundation out of 755 plays. We were deeply moved by the artistic merits of poetic storytelling and mythos, and compelled by the play's promise as it explores a community trying to heal while being on the front lines of climate change destruction. We hope this play is widely read, finds dedicated collaborators, and moves swiftly towards production. #BAPF2021
