  • Ross Tedford Kendall: Ghost Story

A spooky twist on a character driven two hander. Lia Romeo carefully builds the characters, and then teases the idea of something else going on. Simple, effective, and powerful, you'd be well served having this on your stage. Hitting so many emotions in a quietly riveting play.

Lia Romeo’s Ghost Story is a brilliant examination of loss, race relations, sexual relations, age relations, and being haunted by more than just ghosts. It’s rare to see a ghost story focus on the living and the lives they lead over the chilling encounters with spectral visitors.

I listened to a reading of GHOST STORY on At the Table (for free! You should listen there too!) and found the twists and turns of the story to be engaging and exciting as the magic of the piece unfolds. This tight two-hander would be perfect for an intimate space at a regional or community theatre!

Congratulations, Lia. I attended a reading of your play last week in Durango, CO. Moving and well done. I liked the fact that the man in this play was reluctant to pursue a one night stand. Usually, in my opinion, it's the woman. Also liked the idea that two people of very different backgrounds, age, and race can connect; what brings them together is their loneliness and his persistence.

A beautiful romance that captures the emotions at play when it comes to love and connection as we find our way on the journey. Well done.

Lia Romeo's crisply written jewel sparkles with poignant wit and achingly beautiful romance. A love story, a ghost story, a story about race relations, an older woman / younger man relationship... Romeo weaves these all together with effortless ease by finding and capitalizing on the universal humanity in her characters and their story. A truly winning little gem.

  • Mike Solomonson: Ghost Story

I had the opportunity to hear a reading of it by Kane Repertory Theatre, and the relationship between the characters is emotionally compelling. The use of metaphor is also memorable, as the falling boxes and "ghosts" are so strong because the answers aren't given which allows for the audience to fill in that metaphor with their personal experiences and what is occurring in the cultural moment--whenever the play is produced in the future.

A beautiful, small story filled with aching melancholy, two well-drawn characters, and perfectly excellent self-contained unity of time and space. Romeo comments on love, loss, moving on, connection, and loneliness in ways that feel universal. At the same time, she doesn't ignore the specific identities of her characters and how those inform their journeys--how they are drawn together, what might divide them apart, and what options they have to grieve and move on. The lightly magic touch (catapulting boxes!) adds a subtle but effective visual metaphor and makes for an awesome final stage...

Funny and loaded with clever wit. Lots of unpredictable turns through a leapfrog of emotions between the two characters. Moments that brought chills. PS. I find it rude when people ghost parties, but I'm guilty of doing it.
