She relives a fateful day - Lina's 19th birthday. On that day, Lina discovers that all of her Haitian servants have disappeared and there are no staff members available to tend to the preparations and execution of her fabulous 19th birthday extravaganza. She sends for the one man she thinks is responsible for sabotaging her gala event - her long time suitor/pursuer Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, Dictator of Dominican Republic (aka "El Jefe") She soon discovers the lengths he is willing to go to - to win her love. Will she ever be allowed to enter the gates of heaven?

This dark comedy is not based on recorded accounts of the actual interaction between these two historical figures, but is a surreal consideration of the human wants that might prompt a person to commit a crime against humanity and the possible consequences.

With the assistance of Trujillo’s influence as ruler, she was “the elegant female mascot”, the reigning Queen of the 1937 Carnival in Dominican Republic.
