Get It Together

Mary Hewitt, an aspiring poet from Philadelphia on the cusp of her life, falls for and rages against Harold Kruger, her Main Line paramour she just can't figure out. Set across two nights two years apart, the comedy follows the pair through heartbreak, grief, and anxious desire as they question: What the hell is wrong with my family? Do cheaters ever quit? And who will understand me, if not you?

I saw this play in the Philadelphia Playhouse West production and enjoyed it a lot. The simplicity of the structure was a great showcase for the complexity of the characters— both Mary and Harold are flawed and wanting to be better and we got to see them mature and regress and grow over the course of the play. Highly recommend.

Quinn perfectly captures the intimate moments two years apart between these two people that just looking for life to make sense. Beautiful dialogue and incredibly crafted characters. I found myself not knowing whose side I was on throughout the entire play. A sign of a great play is when the audience is left with so many more questions than clear answers. Much like the relationship at the center, this play is complicated and ceases to leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

A wonderful and challenging play that strikes chords of realism at every turn. GIT is a compelling look into the passage of time through the lens of two misfit-lovers in a season of discovery and coming to terms with expectations their younger selves had for the future. A great play for actors to remember that "just being" and "telling the truth" in the moment is enough. Quinns work here easily fits in the company of the plays of Neil LaBute, Kenneth Lonergan and Adam Rapp.
