  • Neil Radtke: Two Sleeping Babes

In Two Sleeping Babes, Samantha Oty builds real tension by refusing to answer every question. It’s a focused two-person play that lets uncertainty do the work, which is what made it unsettling. I appreciated that it trusted the audience to sit with that discomfort.

Well that's just not fair! Samantha Oty has left me on tender hooks dying to know how Mrs St. Clair's fate will unfold following this scene, that's how captivating this piece is! Not just that but I am sure that if I saw this with friends we would spend HOURS in the pub debating the fairness of the society that is judging Mrs St. Claire for a crime she may or may not have committed. Its a fascinating and complex scenario that entices an audience to debate and is sure to leave them wanting to know more!

This short play had me captivated from the jump. Samantha Oty writes these two characters with very little detail on the page yet gives plenty of room for the audience to understand who they are based on behavior. This is a well-written short play that needs to be produced!

Oty has created a compelling tale in which a grieving mother confronts a journalist that she is convinced is running a smear campaign against here. I found myself being drawn in by the terse dialogue, and wanted to see more of this story. As the show if currently listed as "In Development," let me add that I do want to see more, and I feel that the story may be too big for a ten minute format. Very compelling.
