Recommendations of Apocalypse Dating Play

  • Jacqueline Goldfinger: Apocalypse Dating Play

APOCALYPSE has it all. Well-written characters, thoughtful social commentary, terrific comedic moments, and love. The synopsis says that it has a "drive to find hope the midst of hopelessness" which is exactly what we need right now as we go into yet another year of COVID craziness. Hope as a thing with feathers but also with complex questions, imperfect characters, and truthful humor. This play should be on stages across he country.

  • Interact Theatre Company: Apocalypse Dating Play

InterAct Theatre Company presented APOCALYPSE DATING PLAY as part of our 7th Annual Core Playwrights Weekend in December 2019. Jarrett's vibrant theatricality is on full display in this piece, playing on the genre of science fiction and pushing the boundaries of theatrical imagination. APOCALYPSE DATING PLAY is unabashed in its hopefulness, bravely reckoning with trauma while refusing to make it the final word. We are proud to have contributed to the life of this piece.

  • Emma Goldman-Sherman: Apocalypse Dating Play

This play is a brilliant exploration of real life in the guise of a game with a host (like the host of hosts?) and really high stakes (our lives). The challenge - whether or not we can open ourselves to each other in spite of our traumas so that we can survive. Winning depends on our abilities to be vulnerable! McCreary has created an intense play that I find highly relatable and true.

  • Nick Malakhow: Apocalypse Dating Play

Spectacular! McCreary creates a defined and bold theatrical universe that is cohesive, vivid, and unsettling. The play both presents a creepy post-apocalyptic vision of the future and serves as an extended and effective representation of the black queer experience as survivalist horror where people both struggle and succeed to find positive relationships and strength. It tackles trauma, past and present, intimacy, fellowship, and the toxic ways society frames survival as pitting potential allies and communities against one another. All of this is presented with a dose of dark and savvy humor...

  • Shaun Leisher: Apocalypse Dating Play

A play that works so well as a dystopian sci-fi genre piece while delving into the idea of trauma and pain that LGBTQ+ Black people go through. It's a play about survival and how that means something to different to each of these excellently crafted characters. McCreary shows a real skill for upping the stakes and creating tension but letting the audience breathe and laugh as well. A play that is so hopeful while still being a horrifying reminder of what it's like being queer and Black in America today.
