this is not the reunion

by Maddie Dennis-Yates

You know when you're only a couple years out of college and you try to visit camp with your old camp friend group and it's just not the same, and you are just as scared as if not more scared than you were as a pre-teen of all the spooky things about it? And then your friends start to get picked off one by one by the ghost of a drowned girl from a ghost story someone wrote on the barn attic wall? It's so weird...

this is not the reunion

Maddie is a master of writing characters who are at once desperate for change and terrified of it. That
duality creates beautiful, subtle tension in this play where campers are torn between the idyllic versions of who they were at camp, now grown into adults still chasing self-improvement. The world of this play is such a delight to rest into. Wry, subtle, surreal, and so refreshing, this is a quick-paced read that would shine on a larger stage or be an awesome script for college-aged-groups looking to produce new voices.

  • The Workshop Theater: this is not the reunion

The Workshop Theater is pleased to recognize Madeline Dennis-Yates as a playwright selected out of a competitive pool of applicants for our Winter 2021 Writer’s Intensive. The Writer’s Intensive is an eight-week long, playwright-driven process geared towards revising an existing play. Madeline wields an air of whimsy throughout the play - what starts out as a fun reunion of a group of young women at their childhood summer camp turns into a mystery and ghost story. Secrets from the past are revealed as the ghost of a drowned girl haunts the group. Our congratulations and thanks to Madeline.

  • Toby Malone: this is not the reunion

A fresh, energetic take on multiple tropes - slashers, reunions, friendship - where Maddie Dennis-Yates does the reader the great service of not over-explaining, but allowing the characters and situation to coalesce gradually, resulting in a full, satisfying, creepy conclusion. A great character study for an all-female cast.
