Tom Cavanaugh's monologue is stunning and chilling. It does exactly what he explains the semicolon has the power not to do: stop you dead in your track. The power is in the action that first the friend on the other end of the line takes to save his friend's life, and then in the lost opportinty to take that action a second time. It hits us over the head with the reality that the choice to use a semicolon or a period or explanatuin point is not always ours to make.
