Recommendations of Tucumcari Tonite!

  • Christopher Plumridge: Tucumcari Tonite!

This is what can happen when two conflicting strangers spend forced time with each other, and the result is a fine, slick play by Philip. Once again the playwright gifts us with so much back story that you buy into both characters and wish a much brighter future for them. And we can all relate to the dream of a motel room after several nights under the stars.

Having just driven through Tucumcari, I was delighted to come across this play. The desert is a dangerous place. And so Williams's tight, fast moving one act begins. Super atmosphere, exposition and, as always with Philip Middleton Williams, crystal clear characterization. Bravo.

  • Paul Donnelly: Tucumcari Tonite!

This is a well-constructed buddy comedy with real heart. Stuck in the desert, they share their histories and surprising points of connection arise. Both will leave this moment better able to cope with the curve balls life has recently thrown them. These are two clearly drawn and engaging characters and it is a real pleasure to share this time with them.

Tucumcari Tonight recently won Best Play prize in a play competition, and deservedly so! This unusual and touching buddy comedy is filled with cultural references that delight, and surprising insights that make for the very best kind of theatre. Playwright Philip Middleton Williams once again shows his great craft and skill in storytelling through these two very human characters dealing with a stressful situation.

  • John Busser: Tucumcari Tonite!

I love a good buddy comedy and Philip Middleton Williams presents us with a classic one here. Tony and Alex don't like the circumstances that brought them to where they are and like each other even less. But slowly, through wonderful dialogue and careful revealing along the way, they come to not only understand each other, but respect and connect as well. This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

This play is gripping from the outset and the release of information is at the perfect pace. The characters are distinct and clearly change from beginning to end. Really sweet and fun piece!

  • Jan Probst: Tucumcari Tonite!

Stereotypes are turned on their head in this delightful buddy comedy. Amidst a rather dire situation, the characters slowly reveal themselves with an awkward tenderness via incredibly well-crafted dialogue. The cultural references alone are worth the ride, but this play delivers so much more.

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing this play at the Valdez Theatre Conference! Williams brings his wit and humor to a stressful situation of two men, seemingly at odds and with nothing to offer each other, and we get the wonderful experience of watching their friendship and connection blossom in real-time over the run time of this one act play. Beautiful work!

The odd couple buddy story that takes place in a desert while they are literally on the run. What more can you ask for in a two hander. Great dialogue and characters.

Take two very different characters, put them in the middle of the desert, and force them to remain stuck (or cuffed) together and you have the ingredients for a delightful buddy story filled with laughs and warmth. Philip Middleton Williams lets the dialogue between the two men evolve naturally as they share their stories and find common ground. Witty, intelligent, and loaded with cultural reference gems (Lola Falana!), Tucumcari Tonite is sure to be an audience favorite.
