Recommendations of Fighting Mr. Right

  • CK Brestman: Fighting Mr. Right

Fighting Mr. Right throws a hilarious curveball at the typical boy-meets-girl story. Capturing all the awkwardness and nervous energy of a first date, Joel and Marla's evening seems destined to lead to something else and something else and something else, until Marla proposes something interesting, daunting, challenging, and unusual. The dialogue is sharp and insightful with great emotional swings. A funny and insightful reminder that relationships aren't always all the tidy bits and pieces.

I love quirky comedies, and this short is perfection! Marla and Joel have finished a successful first date, and Marla doesn't want to mess this up, so she's doing things differently with this guy - which Joel finds baffling. The dialogue in this piece is sharp and fast, and even on the page you can tell that this would be a blast both to watch and to perform.

I couldn't take my eyes off the page - This play is absolutely hilarious from start to finish! I couldn't have predicted the events of this play if I tried. The characters are complex, the story is unique, and the ending was beautiful. I can only imagine how much fun performers would have with this piece! Can't wait to read more!

  • John Minigan: Fighting Mr. Right

Fighting Mr. Right is a crisp, engaging two-hander built on fabulous off-balance moments for the characters and for the audience. The surprises (for us and them) are continual, and every moment feels earned--right down to the hilarious and endearing final moment. The only thing not surprising is the long string of productions for this fabulous short!

My first experience with THIS particular play of Lindsay's is right here, right now, on NPX, and I am ever so glad that I read it. If you haven't read a Lindsay play, this is an excellent place to to make your introduction to her work. Everything that makes her a must-read, must-perform, must-produce playwright is here: A sly, witty, bent take on universal truths that is instantly fresh and irresistible.
This play is so good I want to send it to every Impossible Crush that I've ever had.
