  • Ian Thal: SEX, LIES & STYROFOAM - a ten minute comedy

Whether one is an entrepreneurial sex-worker, or the spouse of an artist about to have a gallery opening, everyone eventually has to do the laundry, and sometimes those people cross paths at a neighborhood laundromat. A conversation about pleasure, desire, economics unfold, as a parade of costumes, paraphernalia, and toys change hands.

A great mix of verbal and prop-based comedy.

Two strangers meet in a laundromat. Sounds like a fun start, especially when what is in one of the laundry baskets starts to make an appearance. This comedy is a hoot starting with the fact that one of the women is "a lady of the night". But there is more to the piece than the comedy, as the two women learn important life lessons from each other.

I'm becoming an Arianna Rose fan! This was an intriguing conversation between two fascinating characters in a rare setting. The dialogue was funny and fast, and the plot worked its way inexorably to the fitting conclusion. This would be fun to see.

Superfun caper of a short play! The characters are fabulous, and Lucy is a hoot! I really enjoyed this well-crafted piece that goes exactly where I want it to go. Glad to see that it was reset in a laundromat which is the perfect place for it. Shows what good revision can do!

The lesson is if you want to be a successful cad, wash your own damn cape. Two women of vastly different life experience meet at a laundromat and find their lives changed by the meeting. That so much wit informs this piece (funny lines, funny props, funny situations) just gives the big reveal greater impact.

I came here to say "Talk about airing your dirty laundry" and realized that the previous recommended also started that way. This play is just that iconic! Arianna Rose spills the tea in this 10-minute play. There are two very fun roles for women (one 50s-60s and the other 30s) and a bunch of fun for a props designer (handcuffs, feathers, and more). I heard a radio drama adaptation of this play at Theatre Odyssey's 10 minute play festival 2021. It worked great in that format, and left a lot of fun up to the imagination.

Talk about airing your dirty laundry. This fun little piece from Arianna Rose has great roles for women of greatly varying ages and skill sets. I loved the interaction between the two and the role reversal as well. usually, the roles would have been the other way around and this way we have characters all the richer for it. It also has some much appreciated depth to it, presenting a view of both sides the other finds educational. The grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence, but we both have a lawn to mow. Great fun.

The audience knows at the beginning of this play what a new patient named Lucy does not: that Karen, a patient herself, is pretending to be the sex therapist. What Karen does not know at the outset is that Lucy is getting paid for sex by Karen's husband. One of my favorite lines is from Lucy, who is trying to overcome her addiction to sex: "They don't make a patch for this, do they?" Arianna cleverly leaves it up to the audience's imagination what will happen when the two women meet at the art exhibit. Kaboom! Simple set, well done!
