When We Were gods

by Amara Janae Brady

Inspired by a wooden carving and a nefarious poem about how Black women were not as beautiful, but for some “inexplicable reason” really enticing, When We Were gods tells the story of the Sable Venus’ search for purpose and levity at the precipice of a massive shift in power on Olympus. This play is a grand and gorgeous tale filled with extreme stakes both personal and world-changing. The relationship between Athena and Venus is tender and nuanced. I loved seeing the two of them figure out how to exist as single entities while remaining devoted to each other. The humanity of these Gods is thrilling to uncover and the poetry within the words is a true treasure.

This play is both a sweeping epic and incredibly intimate, a true inventive theatrical excursion that takes my breath away each time I see it on its developmental journey. This is a story that begs to be told so as many people as possible can witness it. I hope to see it produced when we return to theaters - a lot and often.

This play is so, so beautiful! Brady centers the Greek mythological canon within the history of post-colonial reality, therefore exposing the mythology's limitations in how the West has been consuming its stories. When We Were gods is truly unique, gorgeous, and a wonderful examination of myths we once believed to have known, and truths needing to be known. It centers mighty relationships not often seen onstage; beautiful, supportive, and non-heteronormative. The play has a grand feel that many new works are missing, and phenomenally unique characters any actor would be privileged to play.
