  • Playwrights Foundation: Them What Brung You

The community of national and local readers for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival in 2021 enthusiastically recommends THEM WHAT BRUNG YOU as a Semi-FInalist at Playwrights Foundation out of 755 plays. We highly enjoyed the twists and turns, excellent pacing and the transformations that occur. We were compelled by the play's promise as the writer captured a tone blending comedy with surreal, supernatural, and truly eerie moments. We hope this play is widely read, finds dedicated collaborators, and moves swiftly towards production. #BAPF2021

Damn, this play is spooky, gripping, and sad as hell. Tanya O’Debra’s storytelling is so taut and the time jumps in the narrative work so well to set up a relentless sense of dread and moments of real emotion for the characters. Aside from the plot, Them What Brung You is also just a wonderfully theatrical play that I would be excited to see on a stage—I think it’d be a blast to work on a production of it. I hope I get to see it soon.

  • Julie Zaffarano: Them What Brung You

Tanya O’Debra’s play “Them What Brung You” is a chilling Southern Gothic Horror story about a young couple and the incredible birth of their child. Is there evil afoot or are the circumstances unusual but innocuous? A brilliant play with strong characters and breathless dialog. Produce this play now, preferably in a city where I can see it. I was fortunate to read this play through #BAPF2021.
