But Alfred is sure that those who love him will be able to handle him winning a fortune and keep his confidences at the same time.

As Alfred navigates through the process of claiming his winnings, he doesn’t realize what lies beneath the surface of his peaceful, uneventful life. He comes face to face with how society views his race, gender, and age. He discovers secrets that his family has been holding close. He loses someone he loves and discovers a hidden treasure. These footprints weave into the fabric of Alfred’s journey into being a full-fledged adult with the remnants of him still wanting to be a child tightly knitted throughout.

  • Hope Villanueva: Dreams on a Dime

A charming story up front about a family that feels familiar, but is unexpected thrown into complication by the good fortune of winning the lottery. Young Alfred is particularly interesting to watch, balancing his need to care for his family, the desire to keep the whole thing quiet, and wrestling with the struggles of being Black in America. A very worth while read!
