Recommendations of And the Four Last Things

  • Morey Norkin: And the Four Last Things

Samantha Marchant takes us on a wild ride into the afterlife where, courtesy of an Angel and a Devil, our souls are weighed to determine their final destination. This duo focuses on the last four acts before death. Thought provoking questions are raised about our legacies, faith, and fairness. A wonderful challenge is in store for the two actors playing the Angel and Devil as they play a host of different characters throughout. This would be quite spectacular to see staged!

  • Sam Heyman: And the Four Last Things

What a remarkable and theatrical experience this play is - “And the Four Last Things” lets its divinely devilish pair of judges wear an eclectic variety of hats and represent the rich and weird final moments of Dyson, a man whose admittedly meager luck seems to have run out. There’s music, mayhem and many more surprises than a single recommendation can convey. Do yourself a favor: Read this play!

  • Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn: And the Four Last Things

This is such a fascinating story. We have characters we sort of recognize, the angel and the devil, and a whole wild play full of characters we're trying to get to know. But we are getting to know them through unreliable narration and wild and unfamiliar settings. The devil and angel will have a blast creating the multitude of characters and environments. This play is truly an adventure to mount as well as to view. And the music to be created for this piece could likely be life altering!

  • Joe Swenson: And the Four Last Things

First of all, amazingly imaginative premise. If you’re looking for rich characters, limitless imagination, and a well structured plot, then I highly recommend this show. I had so much fun imagining Dyson and Ethel as many different fictional characters and Samantha Marchand does a wonderful job of allowing this through each of the”things.” Would love to see this on its feet. Great show.

  • Jerry Polner: And the Four Last Things

In this funny, imaginative, sweeping play, Samantha Marchant has created the only music promoter in America who can produce the last song of a brilliant, dead artist, just as long as it doesn't get in the way of the Adamite religious order (which is NOT, repeat, NOT a cult) he has sworn to uphold. A great read!

  • Rachel Feeny-Williams: And the Four Last Things

I can see this being brilliant to watch as the Angel and Devil dive in and out of various roles! Samantha has taken a wonderfully unique idea and delivered spectacularly well! A small cast piece can be difficult hold an audience but for me I was there and wanting to know more right the way through to the last moment. Its no wonder its had so many wonderful things said about it! If allowed it could have a bright and promising future, so produce it!

  • Christopher Soucy: And the Four Last Things

What a fantastic play! Perfectly paced and well balanced (pun almost intended.) I found the setup brilliant and the payoff cathartic. I could easily see it on the stage in my mind as I read. A wonderfully theatrical piece that will undoubtedly delight audiences wherever it is produced.

  • Viraj Shriwardhankar: And the Four Last Things

I enjoyed reading this so much. I loved reshaping of the Angel and Devil characters, as opposed to how we know them in pop culture. With two actors playing so many roles, I'd almost expect it to get confusing, but even on the page, Marchant sets up her work so clearly and concisely.

  • The Workshop Theater: And the Four Last Things

The Workshop Theater is pleased to recognize Samantha Marchant as a playwright selected out of a competitive pool of applicants for our Spring 2021 Writer’s Intensive. The Writer’s Intensive is an eight-week long, playwright-driven process geared towards revising an existing play. And the Last Four Things is a highly ambitious work examining eschatology utilizing a dizzying but very entertaining fluidity of time as one man's soul hangs in the balance. Samantha's time in the intensive focused on deepening the audience relationship to her protagonist and she was highly successful in that effort...

  • Stephen Kaplan: And the Four Last Things

I had read the first 20 pages in a writer's group and immediately knew I wanted to read the full play. A fascinating story told in an incredibly theatrical manner. It keeps you wondering and guessing as to how things will turn out for Dyson and his ultimate fate. Inventive and constantly surprising.
