Genuinely one of my favorite plays of all time! I licensed this play for a reading at my theater and it was very very well received. Brilliant analysis of kink, desire, and power. And so incredibly funny. Each character is so familiar yet so distinct. I'm truly obsessed. This play needs to be produced nationwide.

This is an incredibly sharp and hilarious piece that manages to be entertaining while having transformative conversations about and explorations of power, intimacy, sex, relationships, agency, consent, and more. Each character is a vividly-rendered individual with a distinct voice and potent wants and needs and insecurities that feed off of and bristle against one another. Erin's a compelling nucleus for the play who is human and easy to sympathize with; at the same time, she is not let off the hook and is at the center of complex interpersonal dynamics with other imperfect, likable, and, above all, human people.

This play has a little bit of everything: lightning paced and witty dialogue, great well-rounded parts for the whole cast, thoughtful and honest insights into sex, relationships, gender, and why we want what we want, and a little bit of snack charming. The fluidity between spaces really adds to the fluidity of the discussions of gender and sexuality. I was engaged from the very first moment to the very last moment.

A thoroughly fascinating dissection of sex, desire, and all of the various complications. The play takes place primarily over the span of a single sexual encounter, and Wetzell uses this incident to lay out a road-map of desire, fantasy, and the exhilarating temptations of risk and transgression. All of the thoughtful content happens naturally, with characters who are consistently engaging and real.

Playwrights Foundation highly recommends MEDIOCRE HETEROSEXUAL SEX, which excelled to the Finalist round (top 35) for the 44th annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival out of 755 plays. Our community of readers felt this play best represented the mission of our festival. This work engaged us, inspired us, moves us, and was an outstanding example of transformative storytelling. Mediocre Heterosexual Sex is far from being mediocre in any way. The pace is whiplash, the dialogue is sassy and sobering, and the tone is at once brilliantly controlled and also unpredictable. This play is so incisively detailed in its self-critique about sex, gender, BDSM, equality and a plethora of other interpersonal relationship dynamics while also being absolutely hysterical and tender with its all of its characters.
