The Write Choice

by Daysha Veronica

An insecure, early career, black playwright is flown out the night before a highly produced staged reading of her first play when she discovers upon arriving that her cast wasn't exactly what she had in mind.

  • Morey Norkin: The Write Choice

This play from Daysha Veronica provides a captivating, thoughtful, and much-needed look at how important it is, not only for a playwright’s voice, but for diverse voices in all walks of life to be heard and respected. Veronica’s characters are multi-dimensional, and she does such an excellent job of framing the conflict from multiple perspectives that audiences will likely engage in animated discussions similar to the classroom scene in act two. This play should be required reading for theater programs and new works projects!

  • Playwrights Foundation: The Write Choice

The community of national and local readers for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival in 2021 enthusiastically recommends THE WRITE CHOICE as a Semi-Finalist at Playwrights Foundation out of 755 plays. We were deeply moved by Violet's journey as her voice is silenced in the current white supremacist American theatre culture. We were compelled by this play's promise as an important, straightforward conversation about race and racism in theatre & educational institutions. We hope this play is widely read, finds dedicated collaborators, and moves swiftly towards production. #BAPF2021
