This is a fantastic tour de force of a play! It’s an entrancing story and the way the characters gracefully become other supporting characters reminds you of the magic of the theater! I fell in love with the characters, the rhythm of the dialogue, and the structure of the play.

This isn't a play, this is a SHOW! I was wiping tears at the finale, and I fell in love with the characters in this story. It's devastating that we are still fighting this disease, but while we fight, we can still do it in style.

I loved this play. The structure of it mimics that of a variety drag show, oscillating between intimate scenes backstage and meta-theatrical performances. A joyful, loving play honoring the history of drag, queerness and the disproportionate number of black queer men killed by political inaction.

This play is absolutely stunning. From the characters who popped off the page, to the seamlessly flowing structure, this is a gorgeous play about identity and how we find ourselves in the stories we tell.

"At the Wake of a Dead Drag Queen" is both heartbreaking and magnificent. Vickie and Courntey's relationship dances vividly off the page and is perfect for the stage. The tenderness of this script made me both laugh and cry, which is a testament to the excellent writing.

Read the epilogue to see the numbers behind how AIDS ravages communities of Black gay men and how our government still could care less. Guest gives a face and voice to those statistics by inviting us into this wake. By using the the medium of drag we are asked to investigate the concept in truth. Whether or not we know what's true or not by the end of this play is up for debate. What is true is that unless we do something we will keep losing brilliant humans like Courtney/Anthony. Brilliant, beautiful, bittersweet, heart-breaking. I LOVED reading this play - would love seeing it staged even more. Thank you for this play - what a gift to theatre.

  • Nick Malakhow: At The Wake of a Dead Drag Queen

Exquisite and theatrical, this piece is both incredibly grand and wide-reaching in thematic and aesthetic scope, while also being incredibly intimate and specific. The way it probes intersectional queerness sharply and with complexity is wonderful. The storytelling through the use of drag, music, movement, monologue, and scene work is so eclectic, yet it feels incredibly cohesive. It is wickedly funny and managed to provoke quite an emotional response as I read without a shred of sentiment or schmaltz. I do hope this piece has a long life and that I get to see a live production some day.
