Leon's Dictionary

by Stephanie Satie

In post-Communist Russia a Jewish family struggles to emigrate to a new life. But as they try to maneuver through the insane rules of a changing, collapsing country, they discover that much of the struggle lies within their own walls. Leon’s Dictionary is a play about a universal desire, set in a world few in the West are familiar with.

I found this play to be very well-written, with five vividly detailed characters, and deeply explored themes of emigration and the conflicting attitudes of hope, desperation and paralysis. I read this prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and it felt resonant and relevant then; now it is scarily so.

Satie does an impeccable job of creating a family we believe is real. Their hopes and fears drove the story so well that I felt as if I was hearing them in real time. Others have pointed out that reading this piece feels like seeing a live production: I can attest to that. This play is one that I sincerely hope to see live on stage one day. With just one reading I already feel intimately knowledgable about the Kaminski's... I hope they are doing well.

This is an exceptionally captivating piece of theatre. In fact, I can't remember the last time I visualized a play so vividly just by reading it -- the page BECAME the stage, even without live actors. Part of what makes "Leon's Dictionary" so compelling is that it's inhabited by characters I haven't seen before, whose culture is foreign, and yet they are eerily familiar. Again, I don't feel like I read a play tonight -- I feel like I cheated the pandemic and actually attended a live production. The experience was that immediate. Wonderful writing -- brava !
