A beautiful portrayal of inner faith, and how sometimes we need to build up boundaries in order to feel genuinely unconditional support - all on a page. Bravo, Steve Martin, King of the mini play!

Steve G. Martin is truly a master at being able to communicate deep emotions in a very short period of time. His play Abandonment says so much so quickly and deeply. After finishing it took me a moment to realise how very touched I was by it.

I grew to be gay in Ireland in the 1960s and 70s
I can't believe that this short piece affected me so much.
I spent more than a decade unraveling all things associated with this theme and this wonderful short said it all in sixty seconds.
What I like about, too, is that it is the boy who takes control and does the rejecting.
Kudos to the playwright.

Steve Martin is a genius at short plays -- always surprising me with the power in his pieces. This short piece is so relatable for anyone who grew up within an organized religion and tried really hard to make it work. But then, at some point, it starts to feel like an abusive relationship, and you have to save yourself. I SO got this. I felt it in my bones. Steve Martin does it again! Wow!

The deep emotions of Hugh are portrayed vividly.

This short play is relatable to many queer people who grew up in the south or with religion in general (specifically Christianity). It is intense, vivid, and brings up many emotions! It is probably a concise universal experience and I loves it for that!

A play that both makes me want so much more, and want so much less. A powerful example of the struggles queer people go through when trying to balance faith, the words of others, and who they are. Martin is a master of nuance in this intense, quick play.

Steven G. Martin is a true artist. He has created a number of short plays that absolutely capture the audience and make us feel something important in as little as one minute. Pure brilliance. I would love to see an entire evening of his work on a stage.

This is one of the most powerful and (as a queer man who grew up Catholic) completely relatable scripts about faith I've read in a long time. It's short, intense, and completely gripping. Steven G. Martin is a master! Excellent work.

From the moment you start reading this, you realize that there is a lot at stake. Steven does a wonderful job of infusing confusion into the human element. In a relatively short period of time, Steven takes you on a journey of Godliness into abandonment and gives Hugh a layered complexity that you rarely see in 1 minute pieces. Outstanding job!
