Recommendations of Five Frickin Winters

  • Donald E. Baker: Five Frickin Winters

Kim E. Ruyle populates his plays with interesting characters with distinct personalities. The four in this play are no exception. Each is looking for love, but they don't always know how to find it, and one is definitely looking in the wrong place. Strong story, realistic dialogue, characters you care about, an unforeseen denouement. Vintage Ruyle, and, as always, excellent playwrighting.

What an amazing and funny journey that Ruyle takes us on with "Five Frickin Winters" Love and relationships are such unpredictable beasts that we're lucky at all to find either during our time here on earth, but this play gives us such vibrant characters who are also so realistic and the dialogue is as good as it gets filled with humor and wit and realism that you will make you remember Roger, Carm, Kat, and Kev long after the play has ended.

KIM E. RUYLE’s play, “Five Frickin Winters”, is a thoroughly enjoyable play from start to finish. I love the characters, the banter, the romantic tension, interesting twists, and nice ending. I laughed out loud and loved the give-and-take between the characters. This is a gem and the actors will love playing the parts with all the wonderful nuances, wit and humor.

  • John Busser: Five Frickin Winters

I have to say, this was a page turner from the get go. If it was this good just reading it, it would be even better onstage, where actors would have a blast bringing these characters to life. Everyone is a completely distinct personality with such a compelling story to tell. My favorite was poor Kev, who constantly seems about 2 pages behind everybody else. But the dialogue is where this play sings. Kim Ruyle gives some of the best flirtatious dialogue I've seen in a play in a long time. I was completely taken with this piece.

  • DC Cathro: Five Frickin Winters

A modern farce full of physical comedy, great laughs, and some cerebral dialogue that sets it apart from the typical funny plays out there. These strong and well defined characters take us on a wild ride of love and lust, leading to an unexpectedly sweet (and maybe a little sad) finale. A fantastic script, worthy of many a production. Fore!

  • Megan Ann Jacobs: Five Frickin Winters

There are not enough roles for our seasoned actors that really give them something to get excited about. Ruyle's piece doesn't have this issue. In fact, this play masterfully explores the themes of romance, aging, and other incredible real struggles while never holding back on the wit! I can think of so many theatres where this is exactly the type of show they are searching for. It deserves to see the light of production!

Kim E. Ruyle writes great roles for older actors, giving them pithy dialogue and setting them in thorny situations, and while there is a glossy wit on the surface, their conflicting emotions bubble underneath like acid. This is a sharply written work, and should be produced. Often.

  • Ross Tedford Kendall: Five Frickin Winters

A great, complex play about the prickly pitfalls of romance and infidelity. Each character's point of view is sharply realized, and the story doesn't spare any of them from their own flaws. This would be a great four-hander, especially for actors in the age range of the characters.

  • Jean Ciampi: Five Frickin Winters

Roger's struggles as a writer are the least of his worries as he gets swept up in the escalating conflicts happening next door. Adding in a sexy new woman to the mix only seems to muddy his waters even further as he tries to chart a course forward. Authentic and, at times, caustic, "Five Freakin' Winters" is well-seasoned and real.
