  • Baylee Shlichtman: TELL ME I'M GORGEOUS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, The Last Gay Play

We've seen the kind of play John Anthony and Silber are trapped in before, and we know how it ends for them. But then the apocalypse arrives. The world shatters. This play is so impressive in its scope, its ambition, its assuredness. I haven't read anything quite like this before or since.

  • DJ Hills: TELL ME I'M GORGEOUS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, The Last Gay Play

A biting, hilarious send up of gay male relations and the White Gay, this play is a smart, deeply moving satire of apocalyptic proportions. An unabashed display of theatricality and pageantry.

Beautifully written and yes, gorgeous! This satire of gay plays is moving and thrilling, and I hope it gets produced soon. I would love to see it! The structure and smarts, the fabulous funny... Read it and enjoy!

  • Bram Hartman: TELL ME I'M GORGEOUS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, The Last Gay Play

An absolutely stunning play. We've all found ourselves on the outside looking in and this play addresses that feeling. We think about what are our own lived experiences compared to what we think we should be experiencing, the fomo and "should we" beliefs. Coleman's work is relatable, but very smart, and funny. I would really enjoy seeing this play produced.

Quite gobsmacked by this smart, funny, audacious work. Aaron's hand feels so steady in this play. Detailed tone development, structure, and point of view guide this deconstruction of white-gay-friend-group plays. Confident writing meets sheer buffoonery.

  • Nick Malakhow: TELL ME I'M GORGEOUS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, The Last Gay Play

Loved this genre bending, stylistically eclectic, and incisive skewering of toxic social constructs in cis-gay and queer male culture. The exploration of how commodified masc-whiteness is, the catch-22 of wanting to escape such beauty norms and constructs while being unable to do so, and the lines between friendship, sex, love, and romance was all so thorough. Hilarious and biting, some unsettling horror elements, and potent realism mixed with verse...this piece was so comprehensive and pic in scope! So visually mind-boggling, but my director brain can still envision how it might happen.

  • John Bavoso: TELL ME I'M GORGEOUS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, The Last Gay Play

This play is epic in scope, language, themes… just epic, really. A frenetic, metatheatrical satire with real teeth and surprising heart. I tried to picture myself in the audience as this piece slips deeper and deeper into absurdism while shining a brighter and brighter light on the deeply uncomfortable truths of modern gay culture. I sincerely hope to one day be in an actual audience, watching this play; until then, read it!

  • Rachel Lynett: TELL ME I'M GORGEOUS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, The Last Gay Play

From the very first page, I knew this play would be amazingly theatrical and important. And talk about a satire that bites back. I love the exploration of beauty specifically in the gay community and the hyper realism that ultimately shows how even the most absurd realities still shine on hard truths. Amazing play. Can't wait to see it produced.

The Workshop Theater is pleased to recognize Aaron Coleman as a playwright selected out of a competitive pool of applicants for our Winter 2020 Writer’s Intensive. The Writer’s Intensive is an eight-week long, playwright-driven process geared towards revising an existing play. Tell Me I’m Gorgeous at the End of the World is a biting satire of The Gay Play that ruled stages in the 1990s. The piece is pitch Black, hilarious, and urgent, both onstage and off. Our congratulations and thanks to Aaron.

Funny, subversive and wonderfully absurd! I love the use of lists, rhymes and disruptions and how this script asks the question of who gets to decide who is beautiful.
