Berrigan, or an Island tale

Meanwhile, on a different island, a girl has somehow broken the Perimeter, even though nobody’s done that in like a thousand years. The Keeper has decided to let her stay, too, which is strange, considering the lack of food already. Really, though, the newcomer is just another task for the Keeper's Assistant, who has enough on his plate, what with the cooking and keeping the Keeper's house and everything.

The characters in this piece feel incredibly real and the elevated setting feels real on an even deeper level. Lysik combines realism and surrealism beautifully here to make important points.

  • James La Bella: Berrigan, or an Island tale

Berrigan, or an Island Tale is lyrical, turbulent piece that breathes immediacy and theatricality with its every movement. Lysik expertly mixes poetry and sparse, brutal prose, and has written a play that will be a dream to any director lucky enough to develop it.

This show can be cast in multiple ways, depending on the intent and confines of the production. The three major characters in each world can be played by the same actors, or different. The Members of the Community (whose lines remain unassigned in the script) can be numerous and fill the stage, or simply unseen voices.

Regardless, at least 50% of the cast should identify as People of Color, with an active focus on casting people of all genders, races, and abilities. Anna must be played by an actress of Asian descent. Stephen must be played by a Black actor. T must be played by a White actress. The rest of the characters remain open to interpretation.
