In a post-pandemic world (where we realize sometimes the show won’t actually go on), Young gives us relatable characters who go through all the highs and lows that make theatre truly magical. A true gut-punch of a love-letter to our art form that left me with “all the feels” and tears in my eyes. It also happens to be exceedingly producible!

What an absolute joy of a play! A metatheatrical love letter to the challenges of theatre and the people who rise to meet them. I couldn't stop picturing the play as I read it, and I couldn't stop laughing.

Duels, intrigue, daring-do, puppets, a truly astounding battle sequence, and so much more! This is everything you could want in an adaptation of the Three Musketeers, with a big meta twist. By cracking open the traditional narrative to make the inner workings themselves part of the spectacle, Young captures something essential to Dumas' novel. Through on the fly edits, conflicts between actors and director, and characters discovering the joy of the story as they tell it, this adaptation is both surprisingly faithful, and a creation that stands entirely on its own.

I'm a big fan of theatrical adaptations, and when I heard that TJ had tackled Dumas' swashbuckling epic - one of my faves, that I just re-read - I *had* to seek out this play. What a treat! Not only does the play embrace one of the funnest (and most-improbable plots) in all literature, but in its delightful pages, we get a love song to theatre, which I imagine most of us miss something fierce. Young explores Dumas' thematic footholds and takes the audience on a fantastic adventure, digging into the eternal questions while creating pure joy. Merci beaucoup, TJ!

This is the way you adapt a massive story. It's fun, it's theatrical, and it's funny as all hell. Sock puppets and sword fights: count me in.

A very funny ode to putting on a theatre production, great fun!

Young has given us a love letter to Dumas' source material and theatre itself with "The Inseparables." There wasn't a moment in this script I wasn't engaged. The chaos - the glorious chaos of this woefully unprepared company of artists was a joy to read - and I hope to see it staged soon.

    It's got stage combat!
    It's got wonderful emotional gut-punches!
    It's got puppets!

What are you waiting for? Read it. Produce it.

  • Mora V. Harris: The Inseparables

This play is a sweetly funny love letter to the theater that reminds us that even when everything goes wrong with a production, being in a rehearsal room with each other is still pretty great. It was a ton of fun to watch on zoom when presented by The Pittsburgh Public Theater, and will be even better fully staged to show off the brilliant moments of physical comedy built into the script. A perfect choice for those familiar with Three Musketeers as well as newcomers to the story! I highly recommend!

What grand good theatrical fun....The Three Musketeers poured through the prism of Noises Off, as a third rate American "company" wanders blindfolded through Dumas's mad plot. Thank you T.J.Young for a lovely read and the hope of an imminent production.

I nearly never note in recommendations that I've worked on a script, but this one has to be the exception, because I'm so damn proud of TJ Young and what he achieved with 'The Inseparables'. As TJ's dramaturg, I stood by in wonder as he transformed Dumas' turgid 800-page novel into a joyous romp that is both reverential and entirely original, an ensemble piece that is as much a love letter to theatre as the source material. Pittsburgh Public's staged reading was a joy: but even better will be when this is able to premiere live. I can't wait.
