  • Katy Laurance: The Continuity Girl

The pace of this piece, apart from being snappy, vibrant, and exciting, is also entirely suited to the subject matter, and subtly makes the dawn of movie making all the more real. I particularly enjoyed the moments that the devices of the play (like letting Tilly be a continuity girl for her own story) allowed the piece to delve into Tilly's feelings and relationships.

One of my joys of reading an Alice Josephs play is in learning about small slices of British history — in this case British film history — that would have gone unnoticed by these American eyes. "The Continuity Girl" is a wonderfully theatrical play that tells the tale of British cinema (and of the 20th century) in an engaging way. The details, particularly in Tilly's opening monologue, are so vivid they jump off the page. I would love to see this on a stage somewhere. Bravo!

It takes a very precise and organized brain to be a "continuity girl" and an even more organized and CREATIVE brain to make such a great piece about the bygone ways of old cinema through the eyes of a continuity girl. Josephs impresses with details that are fun, dramatic and nostalgic. A great piece to perform at an "Old Hollywood" event!

  • Mackenzie Raine Kirkman: The Continuity Girl

Beyond being a charming piece I think the biggest thrill of this piece is that Josephs' skillful writing makes it seem as if this piece truly is from another time. It's fun, theatrical in its use of time and pacing, and very informative!

I love it when an author brings you instantly into the script without effort, as Alice does here. I can clearly see this staged, with lots of old props and lights etc, it would be a joy to watch. Above all Tilly's energy keeps us captivated throughout, I only wish we'd seen more of Mr Hitchcock himself. I also admire the formatting of the script, it's as if it were typed on an old typewriter by Tilly herself! Love it!

  • Jack Levine: The Continuity Girl

My love of all things theater gave me a thrill to read this wonderful gem. “The Continuity Girl” is a position I never heard of, but the importance of this job is enormous. I love the history; I love the rush of long hours of hard work; I love the sense of accomplishment; I love the breathtaking magic of the theater and movies. I strongly encourage the production of this play!

  • Robert Weibezahl: The Continuity Girl

A delightful short play that beautifully underscores the dirty little secret of the film business, both then and now: the unsung, invaluable contribution of women who kept (keep) things together behind the scenes. With all it theatrical elements—offstage voices! Singing and dancing!—the world of early moviemaking comes to vibrant life. I would love to see this performed—and what a great role for the right actress!

  • Rachel Feeny-Williams: The Continuity Girl

I find the breaking of the fourth wall in any piece is always a great device as it draws the audience in more and makes them feel part of the story. This coupled with the wonderful amount of detail the writer explores within the characters job gives it a very 'real' feeling. I also loved the 'Hollywood' style of speaking the characters have ("It may have started in Walthamstow"). The writer proceeds to stack delight on top of delight in this piece and will definitely have you smiling.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short play about a young woman whose job in the film industry was to check for continuity from shot to shot. Ever since watching the film Mank last year, I have loved reading plays about the golden era of moviemaking. This is the second play of Alice Josephs that I have read in this genre, and
she really has a great talent for transporting us to that world. I hope to read, and hopefully eventually see, some of her wonderful plays onstage. Very nicely done!
