Piggyback

by Francisco Mendoza

Why is this book club meeting different from every other book club meeting? Because it's the first in-person one after a year of pandemic. Because for the first time, the group is discussing a book written by one of their own. Because one of the members is bringing a mysterious date who's not shy about questioning the club's rules. Or maybe because some weird noises are coming from inside the walls, and it may...

The community of National Committee readers for the 46th Bay Area Playwrights Festival advanced PIGGYBACK as a Semi-Finalist at Playwrights Foundation. We highly enjoyed the approachable and relatable comedy of the rituals of a writers' group offering feedback. We found the turn in the second half of the play compelling and extremely effective theatrically and for the argument about storytelling that is on everyone's mind right now. We hope this play is considered for further development and investigation, and finds dedicated collaborators in this play’s journey towards production. #BAPF46

A group of friends gathers for a book club during the pandemic to discuss one of the member's books. But the conversation becomes challenging when the author's right to tell the story is called into question, and a new member of the group's unconventional methods transform the hypothetical into the frighteningly real. I love how Mendoza challenges concepts about storytelling, and examines what authorship means in a modern era! #BAPF46

What starts as a book club meeting that feels like the most uncomfortable audience talkback in history quickly becomes something much more fantastical and metatheatrical in this quick-witted and sharply observed piece. Mendoza has created a script that asks big questions about the nature of storytelling while throwing in lots of humor and biting satire. It would be so much fun to watch an ambitious director and cast bring this play to life!
