if there's anything universal about chinese-american women, it's that they're not the type to back down from a fight. welcome to the world of BAD CHINESE DAUGHTER, a sweeping epic based on every time any chinese girl's 婆婆 has yelled at her for her poor life choices. follow three generations of Wang women as they navigate life, loss, and love in america all while trying to salvage the gifts of their past.

with each new daughter deciding the future of the next in their hands, BAD CHINESE DAUGHTER investigates how we are (happily and unhappily) tethered to those who came before us, and how we are (luckily and unluckily) empowered, enraged, and entrapped by tradition. most of all, our story asks:

what does it mean to be good?

The community of national & local readers for the 46th Bay Area Playwrights Festival enthusiastically recommends BAD CHINESE DAUGHTER as a Semi-Finalist at Playwrights Foundation. We highly enjoyed the supernatural forces, overlap in generations, and the 100 year time span of the play. We were engaged by the various point of views highlighted in the play, the magic, and the incredibly strong dialogue and pacing. We hope this play is widely read, finds dedicated collaborators, and moves swiftly towards production. #BAPF46

A super theatrical epic that explores assimilation and belonging for several generations of Chinese and Chinese American women and manages to capture three (more technically!) very unique and historically vital socio-cultural and political contexts. The throughline of witty, funny, human dialogue keeps you engaged throughout and serves to really differentiate a huge ensemble of impressively eclectic personalities. The theatrically heightened moments that punctuate each scene thematically tie together what at first might appear to be disparate moments in time. I'd love to see this funny...

An absolute epic saga that spans a century. Lin has a true for making dialogue feel so natural especially when it's covering huge issues. Lots of potential for stage magic that I can't wait to see realized.
