Joe Bravaco and Larry Rosler’s vibrant new play follows the wild adventures of Israel Potter, a soon-to-be married farmer content with his quiet life in the Berkshire Hills. But it’s April, 1775, and Minutemen and British troops have engaged in the Battle of Lexington. Suddenly, Israel is thrust into the Revolution, leaving behind his Berkshire home and Betty, his fiancé. When he shoulders his musket, it sets in motion a remarkable series of adventures on land and sea. As a soldier, sailor, and spy, he encounters extraordinary people, such as George Washington, King George III, Benjamin Franklin, John Paul Jones, and Ethan Allen. The war takes him from the Berkshires to Boston to Paris and finally to London, where he struggles to survive as an escaped prisoner of war. Through it all, the honest Yankee shows himself a true-blue patriot willing to do whatever his country asks. The only thing Israel asks in return is to go home. But America proves elusive in this wildly comic and ultimately poignant tale of an American Candide, based on a novel by Herman Melville. 2 women; 4 men; single set
