La Morte Finale

A meeting across history of a young executioner on the eve of a life change and a woman the Grand Guignol forgot. In time, perhaps Marguerite Cane and Paula Maxa can save each other's souls.

A thoughtful work that finds unexpected but apt parallels between the work of an executioner during the French Revolution and a performer of the Grand Guignol. Both women no longer see the macabre as justified in the face of the real, unjustified horror of real-world tragedy. Societal interest in tragic female death is a similarity between Paula Maxa’s and Marguerite Cane’s eras. However, both women are tired of the world’s injustices and deaths being perpetrated by men. We see an odd but touching camaraderie between Paula and Marguerite.

PAULA MAXA: 50s, any ethnicity, female-identifying, the most
assassinated woman in France, the most prolific actress of
the Grand Guignol. Devastated by the fall of her art form.

MARGUERITE CANE: 20s-30s, any ethnicity, female-identifying,
one of France's longest-serving female executioners.
Searching for meaning during a revolution which forces her
to execute people she admires.
