This play is not only an absolute masterpiece as it pertains to the nature of the text, but is also strikingly beautiful. Just as the essence of Filipino culture permeates each page, so too do the implications of familial trauma. Salamat for this piece of work.

A dynamically sonic play packing a serious emotional punch. The familial relationships are powerfully evocative -- we feel dropped into the boiling water throughout this script and Pilapil doesn't let up for a moment. I can't wait to see this onstage one day!

Sounds before visuals - awesome. The section on washing the rice and the reveal at the end are very powerful.

Now this is a perfect example of a ten-minute play that does such much in a few pages. It packs an emotional punch, playing with time in surprising ways theatrically, while focusing on a family's history, trauma and dreams. A necessary drama for our times.

This play is a rollercoaster in just 13 pages. The characters feel real in such little words I have yet to see a depiction of being decedents of recent(ish) immigrants get to the core of what we feel and experience in the way this play does. It grapples with the core of what we struggle with so effortlessly and succinctly.

An utterly charming and ultimately gut-punching portrait of a Filipino-American lola and her grandson. There's so much going on here as these witty, smart characters navigate a kitchen together: immigration, assimilation, family dynamics...plus hate crimes and other threats specific to our era. A salty, sassy short piece that earns every bit of its emotional payoff.

A really gut-wrenching short play. This is the kind of stories that need to be told during this time.

This is a play you can hear, smell and, most of all, feel. It's full of magnificent sensory details that add a brilliant layer of authenticity to the scene. The script itself is a complex exploration of identity, propelled forward by characters with unique, specific points of view. In addition to the honest, playful, timely dialogue, the piece contains a gorgeous monologue for an older woman. The reversal at the end of the play is unexpected and heartbreaking, but absolutely well-earned. In the future, we will be grateful to have this piece as a record of this period in history.
