←Recommendations of A Perdrix in a Pear Tree (2 minute play)

There's only a hint of the holiday – music on the radio, and plums being pitted - but that's okay, we're still a ways away from the big day. Still, this is a marvelous snapshot of the season between English speakers (Anglophones) in Provence with gentle banter, distant gunshots, and ornithomythological info-dumping. My kind of people. There's also a lovely message of hope at the end of these two delightful minutes.

Christmas is a heightened time when the vulnerable need and seek sanctuary. Thankfully, this hunted partridge finds such sanctuary in this sweet couples pear tree. A lovely opening to the twelve days of Christmas by Nora.

I love the atmosphere that Nora Louise Syran creates in this very short play. Christmas season, indoors, a loving empty-nest couple working side-by-side in a kitchen - it feels cozy, which is different to the action outside.

"A Perdrix in a Pear Tree" isn't driven by conflict. Instead, enjoy the setting it inhabits the the atmosphere imbued within it.

This made me smile.

Syran beautifully observes a simple moment between a couple watching a bird out their widow. Though it may not seem like it, there’s a lot going on around them: a son visiting for the holiday break, hunters hunting nearby, the recent capture of a wild animal… and suddenly they are we are concerned about this helpless bird caught in the middle of it all. There’s also time for a mythology lesson, which I personally am partial to, and it gives the couple a delightful texture.

I want to spend my holiday with these people!

I am intrigued. I like this couple and look forward to the rest in the series! We get history, mythology, and France! Boar-hunting, partridges and roles for mature actors. Huzzah!

Having seen countless recommendations for this series of plays, I thought I would give them a read and the series is off to a very strong start! Closing my eyes after I'd read it I could see the couple stood in their house in the French countryside with their concern over the poor partridge. Its a great new perspective on a classic Christmas song! Bring on the rest!

Daedalus and a wild boar in a Christmas tale? It works beautifully. And it doesn’t need to be Christmas to appreciate this story of care.

A delightful scene with fascinating back story to the famous 12 Days of Christmas song. It always amazes me how a writer can create such an atmosphere in two short minutes and this is exactly what Nora Louise Syran does here! Can't wait to read more!
