Happy Wright

by Straton Rushing

Happy Wright is a strange person, this much we can say for certain. They love aviation, poetry, and Saturdays. But Happy's mind is plagued with questions, the kind that makes the world really confusing. Loosely inspired by Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days, the show is a portrait of anxiety, bravery, and the help we can give each other when we are willing to.

I had the pleasure of seeing a performance of this play, and found it to be incredibly moving and beautiful. Because it deals in the deep highs and lows of humanity, it can speak to a wide audience and can be played by any skilled actor. Art, says Happy, looks at all the chaos of "this eternal, nonsensical world...[that] we didn't ask to be in," and it finds patterns, and meaning, and bravery. And this play certainly does this for its audience.

"Happy Wright" is an engaging play, ideal for any skilled actor, open to diverse casting. The story centers on Happy, who uniquely communicates with the audience using notecards and objects from their backpack. Through these cards, Happy shares their own story, weaving personal experiences and reflections. While Amelia Earhart is not the main focus, her story and other anecdotes are interspersed throughout, enriching Happy's narrative. This blend of media, including lists, poems, and direct storytelling, offers a compelling and layered approach. The play tackles challenging themes, such as...

This play is so chalk full of compassion, and empathy, excitement (and distractions), laughter, and bravery-- and then we get a glimpse at the core of it all; at the bleeding middle of all the reasons we wake up to be as good as we try to be there is a sadness. A little broken piece that carves up our smile. Rushing writes: "Art is the closest thing to magic we get here in the real world..." and this right here? Happy Wright? It's magic. This piece has so much life to offer and it needs to be onstage.
