The Meaning of Ants in My Kitchen is about how we disappear ourselves in order to fit more easily into the world around us. What little parts of ourselves must we chip away in order for others to be comfortable? This play takes place in three worlds that rub up against each other. In the the world of war, two soldiers are cut off from their company and trying to find their way back. In the world of home, two pregnant women are waiting to hear from their husbands who are at war. In Mary's world, she's going to war with herself and the passage of time and thousands of little invaders who threaten to destroy her identity and peace of mind.

The community of national and local readers for the 45th annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival in 2022 enthusiastically recommends THE MEANING OF ANTS IN MY KITCHEN as a Semi-Finalist at Playwrights Foundation. We were deeply moved by the play’s explorations of the price of patriotism, while playing with time, as the writer mirrors form and content. We were compelled by this play’s surrealistic style and universality in metaphor. We hope this play is widely read, finds dedicated collaborators, and moves swiftly towards production. #BAPF2022

Endlessly fascinating and powerful. Edens has devised a play that crackles with the humor of absurdity and leans into significant existential concepts. The separate worlds of the play reflect and comment on each other, ultimately blurring into each other, leaving us with simple and profound lessons on life as a school of war. A play that needs to be produced and contemplated.
