Maisie, the heart of Groustra's blisteringly funny play, is that marvelously rare sort: a protagonist not afraid to feel every emotion at 110%, to her detriment and our joy. As her self-confidence grows, so does her comfort with emotional intimacy, leading to scenes that will have the audience truly rooting for every character. A story centered on questions of how we voice our own desires, for other people and for ourselves – told with all the volume, cringe, and horniness that they demand.

Sarah Groustra has created a wonderful story line premise that carries the day for us. The characters of Maisie is a true slice of life and undergoes terrific changes and the realistic awkwardness of growth. A challenging setting, this piece easily slides from scene to scene with pace and the dialogue is well written and poignant. A difficult subject to write well, this is a master class on writing erotica for the stage. Brava!

Maisie’s coming-of-age journey begins later than for most; it’s a journey that’s poignant and humorous. She’s a flawed but thoroughly likeable and vibrant character surrounded by a terrific cast of supporting characters, each distinctly drawn and essential to the story. The fast-moving dialogue sparkles and doesn’t miss a note. Insertion is an engaging, memorable play. Highly recommended.
