The Gett: Or One Woman’s Creation Myth

by Liba Vaynberg

The menorah behind the Christmas tree in every lobby. The voicemail from your mother you haven’t listened to yet. The lover whose number you can’t forget. The Gett is a tale as sacred as it is profane, drawing on everything from the Torah to bad sex. Punctuated by magic and ritual, this play is a drama of creation as the poet, Ida, restores her own independence.

I had the privilege of seeing this show in person and was absolutely blown away by Liba's writing style. I was particularly struck by the way narration is utilized to distinguish reality from thought, or blur that line when necessary. The scenes transition very smoothly between each other and despite some long monologues, not a word is wasted. By the end it was very hard not to cry. Absolutely loved this complex, intimate, and magical story!
