As Small As Stars

Night after night since the children disappeared, George and Mary Darling wait in the nursery hoping for their return. While George, imminently practical, tallies and figures the cost of any and all possible futures, Mary is resolute that they will return. After all, she saw the boy they've run off with face to face, even if it was through a second story window. Even if that means the boy could fly. Even if that...

Even if that means believing in the impossible. They are a lonely pair—even Nana won't come into the nursery anymore— though they are visited on occasion by George's imperious and wildly emotional mother. As George and Mary get farther and farther apart, magic creeps ever closer to their lives. It isn't until the boy arrives that they are given any answers— that they see for themselves what it takes to fly.

This play has such a beautiful beating heart -- such a unique way to approach a story about ambiguous loss and the details and complications of marriage. It combines a childlike innocence with the broken-hearted world of adulthood in such a genuine way, and the language is poetry. I loved it.

George and Mary compliment each other beautifully in their contrasts. I adore the adding machine/piano scene. Beautiful, beautiful language like, “Oh… Under the memories, behind the hope, around the corners of the my heart and in the hems of my skirts… the park, too.” I would love to see George testing his shadow. Oh my god, the end… my heart swelled. I love this play!
