The Gentle Life-Changing Magic of Burning it All Down to the Ground

by Heather Beasley

After her father's death, a game developer sells her parents' house, against the wishes of her hoarder mother. Now the house must be empty in thirty days. It's a massive mess, and they'll try any method that might help. Friendly bets? Therapy? Sparking joy? Decluttering detox? They're all fair game...and both women are playing to win. A wry dramedy about the things we carry with us and the memories we can't live...

Selected for the 2023-24 Salon Reading Series.
The Gentle Life-Changing Magic of Burning it All Down to the Ground is both an exploration and an example of complex human relationships. Near the beginning of the play, D proposes that this is a cooperative game–no one has to lose. And, while that does not mean that the game is easy, or without consequences, it does mean that both D and M can win; even if winning looks a whole lot like survival in a valued and treasured relationship. Highly recommended for development and production.

  • Nick Malakhow: The Gentle Life-Changing Magic of Burning it All Down to the Ground

A poignant and intimate exploration of family, grief, care-taking, and aging. I truly loved that Heather eschewed manufactured theatrics and unnecessarily life or death stakes in favor of telling a nuanced, complex, and human story. The running metaphors and motifs related to gaming were also perfect figurative complements to the literal story. The slow removal of possessions from the stage was another elegant, symbolic thread that illuminated the ebbs and flows of M and D's relationship and individual character arcs. Eager to see this onstage!
