What an absorbing play. Using a claustrophobic locked-down Capitol hill office as a backdrop, Kissinger creates a piece that is part comedy, part thriller, and part reflection on American governance and the limits of youthful idealism. And sandwiched in between the many great punchlines, she even manages the difficult job of humanizing people who besiege their elected representatives with nonstop bitter commentary. I was sad to miss this relentlessly entertaining piece at the Valdez Theatre Conference and am glad it's here on NPX.

  • Annie Considine: This is Government

I saw this piece at Valdez Theatre Conference and was deeply moved by the subject matter, characters, and important questions it poses about how to be human politically chaotic times. The humor that Nina Kissinger has infused into the dialogue is intoxicating and makes me unusually happy as an audience member to be stuck in a room with these characters for almost an entire play! I cannot WAIT to see this as a full production.

  • Erin Dietsche: This is Government

This play expertly intertwines politics, comedy, friendship, and more. The characters are strong and believable, and the plot is intriguing. Nina Kissinger has written a piece that is both funny and insightful.

A seemingly impossible juggling act, THIS IS GOVERNMENT is at once heartfelt, probing, profoundly empathetic, and deliriously bonkers. With her tale of three young government interns in waaaaay over their heads, Kissinger manages to marry up-to-the-second political discourse with good old-fashioned farcical craftsmanship. In so doing, she finds more to say about our current state of affairs than more Seasoned and Serious playwrights could ever dream of, and does so via three of the most adorable young characters I've seen on stage in years. (Even the "villain" is kind of adorable!) A total...

    WATCHED AT VALDEZ THEATRE CONFERENCE
An outrageously funny and sharp comedy about government paralysis and bomb threats. Its careful pacing is a welcome relieve to a 24-hour cycle of disasters, and its discussion of political reality vs. idealism feels both pointed and even handed. A rare treat of a Gen Z perspective on history.

I love this play. Three congressional interns are trapped in their congressman's office due to a bomb threat, and what follows is a study on American politics, idealism, desperation, and whether or not one person has the ability to make a difference. I absolutely adored it. The dialogue is sharp and funny and SMART, and the play gives the audience a lot to think about. Plus, with a cast of 4 and the action taking place almost entirely in one location, it would be an easy play to stage - and it should be staged often.
