Recommendations of The Magician's Sister

  • Blyss Cleveland: The Magician's Sister

"The Magician's Sister" is a fantastic and poignant play about loss and finding yourself as an artist and as a person in the world. I love how magic is integral to the plot and a metaphor for all the invisible and necessary work done to maintain relationships with loved ones. The plot raises thought-provoking questions about female magicians and performance in public life. There are many fascinating technical challenges in this play and I would love to see a full production.

  • Rory Willats: The Magician's Sister

A dazzling play grounded by the sensitively-drawn relationship between two sisters—equal parts spectacular and precious.

  • Sean Kelly: The Magician's Sister

An engrossing exploration of family, trauma, and the sometimes suffocating pursuit of being “special.” I would love to see a live production with all of the stage magic

  • Zach Barr: The Magician's Sister

Two deeply relatable characters and their richly drawn sibling relationship anchor this shimmering play about the agony and ecstasy of being "special." While the play intrigues with its live stage magic, at heart is a mature, unique discussion about the dangers of prioritizing lasting fame over personal joy. It upholds a forgotten history of female magicians, while reclaiming anonymity as a desirable outcome for one's life. Stage it today!

  • Dave Osmundsen: The Magician's Sister

Slithering seamlessly through time and space, this magical and moving memory play explores how ambition, failure, and the bonds of family can haunt one throughout their life. Both stunningly theatrical and emotionally resonant, this play maintains its magic by never forgetting the core relationship between Magician and Sister. I also appreciated learning about the sadly forgotten histories of female magicians and escape artists. The final pages of this play will live with me for a long time.

A beautiful play about loss and the pressure that comes with being "gifted." Really enjoyed reading this play!

  • Stephanie Alison Walker: The Magician's Sister

This highly theatrical play is grounded in its complex characters and their love for each other. It's deeply moving and filled with surprising moments throughout. I love how we get to see the sleight of hand play out on stage and how sleight of hand is deployed as a metaphor as well. The Magician's Sister is about female magicians, sisters, father-daughter/mother-daughter relationships, suffocating expectations placed on others and ourselves, processing trauma and forgiveness. This is sure to be a massive crowd pleaser and truly deserves many productions!

  • Brianna Barrett: The Magician's Sister

A memory play with the repetitious rhythm of a folk parable. The use of magic/escape artistry would be a lot of fun to see staged, and I particularly love the idea of the unseen escape artist in the background, demonstrating the tricks during the characters conversations. Ominous and rigorously researched -- female magicians are bizarrely underrepresented in the field and I appreciated the opportunity to learn more.

A stunning theatrical experience with plenty of magic, surprises, and twists. Brandli has a command of the stage with complex characters and juicy roles for actors. Entertaining as well as poignant.
