Demons tread upon the innocent. A small Chicago family is on a journey West. They are attempting to escape past horrors as they gather on the newly paved section of 1927 Oklahoma Route 66. A hearing and speech impaired mother with her young daughter, granddaughter, and son-in-law take advantage of the calm evening to spin a Victrola, and christen the new tar by dancing.
With the ever-watchful eye of a local Member of the Cherokee Nation; a group of passer-bys join the scene. They are a Hollywoodland Producer, his wannabe starlet, and his trusty Negro chauffer. All is going smoothly until an angry black woman enters with a mind to blow up the new infernal road. She is a Freedman ex-slave of the Cherokee Nation. She has lost most of her land and blames the road for her husband’s death.
Cooler minds prevail as the night passes to day.
The last scene of the play revels the three passer-bys were actually guardian angels sent to protect the young family. With the help of the spirits, the family have escaped their patriarchal demonic spirit, and may continue on safely. The mother’s brutal past will soon be crushed by thousands of treads on the future highway.
