Recommendations of A Yoga Adventure

  • J.S. Puller: Hidden Seashells: A Yoga Adventure

I had the privilege of seeing this show go up for a reading at the Old Miner's Contest in 2023. Sobeck Knighton's gentle and participatory approach to theatre for the very young was, and is, inspiring. It's an artful exploration of emotional intelligence, guaranteed to keep even the wiggliest of audience members engaged.

We all deal with emotions. Janine Sobeck Knighton gives us a beautiful play that addresses managing them with the practice of yoga, making mental health tools and traditions accessible to all ages. Coupled with audience participation, a youthful journey helps to provide emotional literacy and engagement from the stage. An intelligent and lovely piece of theatre.

  • Rachel Feeny-Williams: Hidden Seashells: A Yoga Adventure

Understanding and being able to process your emotions is hard enough as an adult. In this wonderfully intrieguing piece, Janine takes that problomatic scenario and brings it into the life of a young girl. What you, as the audience are provided with as a result is a powerful and entertaining piece that explores feelings, why we feel those feelings, how we feel those feelings and how we feel when we don't want to feel those feelings any more. Its a fascinatingly constructed story that is sure to reach both children and adults alike.

  • Shelley Graham: Hidden Seashells: A Yoga Adventure

Audience participation is a hallmark of theatre for young audiences, and Sobeck Knighton integrates this so well into this play. Keeping children engaged while also discovering how to manage their emotions and truly play with some of the most important mindfulness behaviors is a noble goal of this script, and one that I think will be easily achieved in production. It's also wonderful to read a TYA script with such a broad target audience, including very young audiences. With just a tiny bit of history and a lot of helpful mindfulness practice, this is a fun, and very producible play.
