After working with Brynn as a dramaturg for a workshop reading of PIETA, I can speak to how successfully the play's theatricality (images, music), character journeys, and themes successfully resonate in the work. Brynn has grounded us in the "accurate" historical context of these real-life women, while simultaneously creating compelling interpersonal drama. The result is a well-balanced story of empowerment and love. A living picture of women BEING -- and a beautiful one at that!

A lovely achievement, full of longing and lyricism and a seemingly limitless supply of vivid theatricality. Hambley displays a clear and tremendous love of the historical period and setting (the Ospedale della Pieta, where Antonio Vivaldi composed for the orphaned girls in its care) even as she interrogates it, focusing on the women left there through a contemporary understanding of disability discourse and queer desire. A wonderful demonstration of How To Do A Period Drama Right.

Ugh this play. THIS PLAY. It's funny and it's sweet and it's heartbreaking. Gorgeous imagery. Dialogue that flows like the juice of the apple running down your chin. This play sticks with me. Dying to see it staged.
