To Love Alone

by Andrew Martineau

(TEN MINUTES) Jill and Curt are strangers looking at Valentine's Day cards in a department store. They start conversing as they marvel at the bad writing, and slowly begin to realize they might like each other in the process.

This well-crafted short play packs a big punch. Who doesn’t hate shopping for Valentine’s Day cards? Two likeable, intelligent young people share their thoughts on love, bad writing, and Gertrude Stein. The dialogue is witty and well-conceived, and I would love to see this staged. Bravo!

Sweet and salty! A witty love note to meet cutes that’ll be a delightful addition to festivals. When strangers Jill and Curt cringe over cheesy Valentine’s Day cards in a store, the two grounded but isolated souls make a hopeful connection. TO LOVE ALONE left me cheering them on and wanting more.

A charming, whimsical, and very poignant two-hander here full of subtext about loneliness and disappointments of the heart. I found myself smiling at the repartee and the skewering of a manufactured holiday, but I also felt sympathy for the two nicely etched characters and their respective senses of isolation. This really should be part of any Valentine's Day themed festival, but it can also stand on its own as a story of two people looking for a connection. Well done!
