Terry Guest deals in heavy themes in an honorable and probing way. The play teases out its monster so delightfully with myth, freedom, and the depths of history. The characters are lively; the way Guest encapsulates the Southern Gothic experience of "nothing to do, everything to do" within them is a masterclass, and First Lady is a perfect harbinger. Oak would be perfect for college theaters.

Theatrical, spooky, tense, thrilling exploration of family and the dangers outside. When a community fails its young people, they have to make their own decisions in an attempt to survive. I hardly ever stand during applause, but in 2024 I stood for this script (and it was for just a reading!), and I would LOVE to see a full production.
