Lou Jones' BREAKING THE CAMEL'S BACK is a linguistically rich and vividly told story of a young woman rummaging in her late grandmother's attic. The dialogue operates on so many levels from the often vapid commentary of social media, to a narration of how the dusty attic affects the protagonist's body, to rhymed verse. It all combines to make a world where Libby's extraordinary character development is believable.

What a lovely story of Libby growing beyond her world of self and learning about the women who came before her, allowing her to be the social media influencer she is today. The past comes alive in her grandmother's attic, showing her the struggles she had and the beauty she brought into the world. Hopefully Libby expands her followers world experience after this episode in the attic!

Lou Jones crafts a narrative that is rich in irony and familial tension. Through sharp dialogue and vivid character development. In “Breaking the Camel’s Back,” Jones expertly explores the dichotomy of social media facade versus genuine legacy. The concept—a live-streamed attic rummage—serves as a clever device, unearthing the value of family roots over material gain. A passionate, contemporary piece that resonates deeply.

Jones displays how a granddaughter caught up in the social media bubble has lost connection with not only her family but herself. The integration of poetry is beautifully constructed and utilized. The connection Libby has with her Mum is well crafted and has a really touching payoff. The journey of change that Libby has is really well developed and it truly makes the play what it is. A beautifully crafted piece of theatre by Lou Jones.

Lou Jones has crafted a charming play that contrasts the vanity and shallowness of today’s influencer culture with the resilience of a couple of generations earlier. With Libby, the young influencer, onstage alone for most of the play, we get to see her growth as she begins to understand the treasure in her grandmother’s attic. Beautifully done.

A wise grandmother leads her vapid influencer granddaughter to an appreciation of the real values in life. Even though she has to do it from beyond the grave. The conditions of the grandmother's will set up the suspenseful narrative and a mother's wisdom keeps the granddaughter from a terrible mistake.

For a play about a woman going through her grandmother's belongings, this piece had me on the edge of my seat. Lou Jones creates a very evocative setting here and Libby is brought to life, both on these pages and IN these pages, as she begins to exhibit a depth she previously lacked as a vapid influencer. I am glad that grandmother was wise in her ways, and both Libby (and the audience watching this) benefit handsomely.

BREAKING THE CAMELS BACK is such a heartwarming play where 3 generations of women come together, even though Grandma has passed.
Libby is live broadcasting her search of her Grandma's attic in the hope she might find something of value, and she does, but more sentimental than financial.
This is a well written short, worthy of its upcoming production. Also Lou hints at a sequel which I can't wait to read. Love it!
