  • John Busser: DESDEMONA ... REVISITED (MONOLOGUE)

Hindsight is certainly 20/20, but if everyone had the benefit of it, they probably wouldn't need it. Desdemona here suffered from a lack of it more than most; lost her respect in Othello's eyes, then her life at his hands. But Vivian Lermond gives her back the chance to maybe help out some future foolish woman out to stick it to Daddy. This monologue is both sad and funny, and that's what makes her monologues sing. Another winner, Vivian.

Poor Desdemona followed her passion and paid the ultimate price. She returns to offer advice to save others from her ill-fated path. But will anyone consumed by love/lust ever really listen to their father?

A dating primer by Desdemona. Sounds crazy, no? But she has something to say. This is fun, outrageous and I'd loved to hear more. An enjoyable monologue with something to say about fathers and daughters and dating.

Now perhaps if I'd read Lermond's account of the short life of our heroine, I would have warmed more to Shakespeare himself...alas... The ghost of Desdemona gives sound advice as only a spurned, wronged and murdered wife can. But even then, with all of the benefits surely the afterlife can bestow, she is yet mystified at the actions of her slayer. But...but, a word of warning is here for any young damsel blinkered by passion... Listen to your Father! Now if only my daughters had...oh well. Another wee gem from one of my favourite playwrights.

A remembrance of a tragic heroine who returns as a guidepost to young teens in the thrall of love … or lust. Filled with the pangs of youthful choices, Desdemona has some advice for young women. Would be fun to see Lermond do a collection of these pieces. Interesting how Desdemona’s fate is an indicator of so many of Shakespeare’s heroines. Shakespeare would especially love the last line.
