Maintaining the character conceit is always a challenge when the character is filled with subtext and memory. O'Neill-Butler handles it with charm and ease. I loved these characters and I always love a good "Zoo Story" setting. A yummy treat that leaves a taste in your mind long after you finish. Brava.

A heartbreakingly beautiful play about memory, loss, and family So many gorgeous lines and moments. This is a subtextual feast for two actors, and another fabulous "Bench play" from playwright Marj O'Neill-Butler. A treat for readers, actors, directors, and audience. Read and produce it - over and over.

  • D. Lee Miller: ONE OLD LADY SITTING ON A BENCH (a 10 minute play)

Trying to contend with the mind of your mother, now a constantly losing Rubix cube of memories and ideas, is painful and heartbreaking. No matter how you know this is the case, you are often caught, surprised at the mind that doesn't match the person in front of you. This play offers gentle character work, backed by so much emotions. Nicely written.

  • John Busser: ONE OLD LADY SITTING ON A BENCH (a 10 minute play)

I was moved at this touching portrait of a woman who so desperately wants to cling to someone she can no longer have, even as she tells her daughter how much she wants to separate from that someone, even to the point of pursuing the goal after a death. Mom may have memory issues that her daughter has to contend with, but her struggles to both love and hate her late husband show there's still a lot going on in her mind. This is complex character work and wonderful writing.

Mom's memory issues are touchingly and subtly revealed in this lovely, melancholy two-hander. Jane has clearly been down this road before and treats her mother with care and grace.
