Mourning Woods Merengue is a lively, character-driven comedy that balances sharp humor with genuine emotional stakes. Kim E. Ruyle crafts a vibrant world of late-in-life reinvention, where loneliness, purpose, and connection collide in surprising and often hilarious ways. The play’s energetic dialogue and strong ensemble dynamics build toward a heartfelt exploration of whether it’s ever too late to rediscover joy—and perhaps even love—on your own terms.

Mourning Woods Merengue is warm, witty, and deeply human. It explores the yearning for connection and purpose in life’s later chapters, with rich characters and sharp dialogue. I look forward to reading more of Kim's work.

I love a romantic comedy centering older characters! This play - really more dramedy than straight comedy - centers five characters, all with such unique voices, and I loved watching them each grapple with the play's theme of relevance - be it in relation to a career, motherhood, the mark they're trying to leave on the world, etc. There's such a great use of physicality in here as well. This is a play you truly have to see performed to really get the fullest sense of it. Lovely!

Mourning Woods Merengue is a lively, contemporary comedy-drama that blends late-life romance, the quest for purpose after retirement, and wonderfully chaotic family dynamics, all powered by the vibrant pulse of Latin dance. Relevance is such a big word and the debate of who is and not relevant would vary greatly in our world of billions. This play gives us that question front and center and the characters all jump through their necessary hoops, and be it "being let go too soon from your job" or "being a world-class mothering type", in the end, it is so important to allow each and every one of us to own up to our relevance but also allow us time to reassess that and shift gears if necessary.
