  • Rene Zabel: Even when the storm comes

We have the privilege of reading this marvelous script today. This poinant work will bring laughs, love, and many tears. The grief process has never been depicted with such skill, empathy, and love. Ryan had the entire cast in tears. This script is a must read and really needs a production ASAP!

  • Maggie Smith: Even when the storm comes

The juxtaposition between the family-friendly park environment and the subject matter is absolutely haunting. Vaughan has written a story filled with brilliant character arcs for both young and adult actors alike, and has utilized them to depict the simultaneous highs and lows life throws at us. As this play continues, it forces you to realize how many emotions one single location can hold— And what memories will forever be associated with it. Packed with lovable relationships and heartbreaking monologues, “Even when the storm comes” will leave you reflecting on where and who you call home.

  • Tom Erb: Even when the storm comes

In "Even When the Storm Comes" Ryan Vaughan explores the resilience of the human spirit amidst adversity. Set in a park circa 1980, it follows a group of characters navigating love, loss, and life's challenges. The narrative is particularly compelling, revealing how the youngest members can be the strongest. Vaughan's work is a testament to the power of community and the silent messages of nature during turbulent times. It's a touching reminder that even in the face of life's storms, there is hope and strength to be found.

  • Wendy Vogel: Even when the storm comes

There's some real poetry in this work, and three very strong roles for young teen actors. It's difficult in a one-act to really make audiences connect and fall in love with the characters, but Vaughan has painted a picture of friendship so strong that even though you know the storm is coming, you hope and pray you're wrong. In the end all we leave are memories, and the three young people in this show will stay in your hearts long after their words have faded. Lovely piece about grief, loss, and the power of friendship.

  • Morey Norkin: Even when the storm comes

A beautiful friendship shared by three young children connects their families and models the love that fills their households. Ryan Vaughan fills this play with sweetness, warmth, and love, which makes the losses so heartbreaking. If you have a heart, you will cry. A lot. But you can take courage from the characters in this play and get through it together with them. Beautifully done.

  • Brent Alles: Even when the storm comes

At first, it's pleasant enough to spend time with these characters, and there is indeed some wistful nostalgia reading about the joys (and fears) of junior high. Then, the play switches to dealing with grief and tragedy, and our fondness for the characters makes what is to come impact us more fully. There are a lot of fine ideas in this play; my personal favorite was probably the statement that those who have passed can send memories to those who haven't. There are many good memories indeed in this particular work.

Tears. Lots of tears. Ryan Vaughan is an incredible storyteller and this story told through the eyes of the characters is equal parts uplifting and familiar, beautiful and reverent, heartbreaking and full of love. Each of the scenes are woven into this thread of commonality and connection and Ryan hits the mark as the play starts to accelerate and emotions continue to escalate. There's something for everyone in this show. Comps would be a combination of My Girl and Bridge to Terabithia to start and so many more. Love this show, highly recommend.

  • Jacquelyn Floyd-Priskorn: Even when the storm comes

This play settles its characters and audience in a place that feels safe and familiar, a park. And little by little the connected families and friends spend scenes reminiscing together. And we begin to see lives hit with love and powerful loss. Each scene could play on its own as a standalone short play, but together we are able to see the impact of time and strength on a group hit with multiple tragedies.
