CALL ME KING, or The Drag Play

by Hannah C Langley

Hallie has a new guy in her life. But his constant compliments don’t change the fact that whenever Hallie looks in the mirror, she doesn’t like who she sees. Only after attending a drag-themed party — hosted by her estranged childhood friend and his hot (?!?!) new roommate — does Hallie begin to find the answers to the questions she was searching her reflection for all along.

  • Mary Lyon Kamitaki: CALL ME KING, or The Drag Play

Call Me King is smart, poignant, and adventurous. Like Hannah's other work, it's both thought-provoking and theatrical, using the live theatre format to explore drag and gender performance in ways that are provocative but accessible. Someone please do this play so I can see it!

  • Amanda L. Andrei: CALL ME KING, or The Drag Play

A tender, deeply vulnerable play that explores friendship, romance, and desire through the dazzling and joyous world of drag. A coming-of-age story that cherishes that momentous, magical encounter of being seen and loved for who one really is, in all their messiness and complexities.

CASTING NOTES:
Actors of any gender identity and sexuality are welcome to play these roles, but the playwright encourages productions to uplift and highlight the talented and often under-utilized pool of LGBTQ+ performers when filling out this cast!

Despite being written via the lens of a white playwright, characters can and (hopefully) will be played by actors of any race/ethnicity; but, due to certain moments of violence throughout the play, the playwright hopes productions will be mindful of the way the play is cast as not 1) to feed into harmful tropes and 2) re-traumatize certain communities of color.
